The world has a wide range of different energy sources. Fossil fuels–including natural gas, petroleum and coal accounted for more than 81 % of the energy consumed in 2018. Renewables, including wind, solar power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy accounts for another 5 percent. Different countries employ different energy sources to balance the environmental and economic demands.
Nature’s energy is available in a variety of forms including sun, wind waves, and ocean. These primary sources are transformed into more convenient energy forms, such as electricity or heat, when they are harnessed. When the energy source is exhausted, they are non-renewable energy sources.
A lot of fossil fuels and a few of the other sources of energy that aren’t renewable have been causing environmental harm. For example mining for oil could take away the planet’s forests. Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) could cause earthquakes and water pollution. The combustion of coal releases carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.
Fortunately that many of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Hydropower, wind and solar for instance, are able to generate electricity without having to search for new resources.
Other sources of sustainable energy are emerging, like the wave and tidal power. But, in order to be utilized at a large scale they must have efficient distribution networks. This requires the use of non-renewable energies to build these networks. These sources aren’t enough to provide the majority of our energy needs. It’s important to remember that the cost of renewable energy equipment has decreased dramatically in recent times and the efficiency of these equipments is growing.
